Club center, Schalders / Scaleres

The new construction of a center for clubs and social organizations in Schalders is expected to greatly stimulate life in the village. The five primary functions are layered one over the other in five above-ground stories. This vertical orientation of the building makes it possible to minimize the amount of land needed and to integrate the building's volume into the very steep terrain and the level differential of the existent retaining walls of the adjacent roadway without resorting to artificial means. The below-ground story with its utility rooms is almost entirely embedded in the incline and forms a smooth transition to the terrain. Together with the vertical orientation, the building's floor plan and the design of the roof represent a successful response to the need to match the look and feel of the surrounding buildings and landscape. Existent spatial edges are taken and integrated. From every visible side, the new building thus displays the right proportions.
