Project description

At the Hotel Löwenhof in Vahrn / Varna, the LS 33 Provincial Highway branches from the Brenner State Highway (SS 12) and leads to the famed Neustift / Novacella Monastery – a building under protection as an historical monument. This project includes the expansion and/or shifting of the route of the existent highway. In the course of the project work, two new bridges, a bicycle underpass, and retaining walls along the Eisack / Isarco River and at the mountain-side embankment were built. The highway was widened to a carriageway width of 5.50 meters, and was shifted in position for about two-thirds of the total length along the Eisack River.
One special challenge was the planning and construction of the new highway bridge at the monastery (which enjoys special legal protection). For this purpose, a 30-meter-long, integrated structural framework of pre-stressed concrete was selected. The bridge was awarded the 2010 Premio Oderzo Prize.
