Project description

The new Schwarzenstein Hut was erected as a narrow "pinnacle" at an altitude of 3,026 meters above sea-level and provides mountain-climbers with a clear indication of the trail from all directions of the compass. The freely shaped facades are designed so as to lean back or overhang – as though they had been formed over time by natural processes.
With regards to its energy needs, the building is designed to be autonomous. Electricity is generated by a photovoltaic installation on the folded metal sheeting roof with a rated capacity of 9.6 kW. There is also a modular cogeneration plant with a rated capacity of 60kVA which is started up to cover peaks, as needed. The electrical energy can be stored in a battery bank with a capacity of 138 kWh. Heat is obtained chiefly from the modular cogeneration plant. The underfloor heating and ventilation system in the day room ensures a pleasant room climate. The drinking water is extracted 450 meters away and conducted to the hut via insulated and heated PE pipes.
