Project description

Construction stage 1 (construction) + 3 (E+M) begins south of Auer, with an uncontrolled traffic node and entry on Federal Highway SS12 to the Castelfeder Tunnel (L = 1000 meters, conventional construction). This tunnel leads to the Mid Auer uncontrolled traffic node where it connects to both the turn-off of SS48 into the Fleims / Fiemme Valley and to the roadway to the town of Auer. The main route is via a more than 200-meter-long, open-cut tunnel to the St. Daniel Tunnel, where construction stages 2+4 begin. The tunnel has a length of 1,245 meters, and was built using conventional methods. Of special note is the oversized south portal of the tunnel and adjacent cavern. This is the largest cavern of a road tunnel in Italy and the sixth-largest worldwide. The segment with the largest cross-section has a length of 148 meters, an excavation width of approx. 31 meters, and a height of about 18 meters. In addition to the main carriageway, this cavern also features the one-lane onramp and exit ramps with connection to the SS12 and the SS48. To the north of the town of Auer, the SS12 ends at a roundabout at the same level as the existent Federal Highway SS12.
